It is okay to use your mobility aid.

by Rana

Many of Rana’s pieces aim to empower disabled and chronically ill people to live their best lives, and this one is no different. Rana says, “Mobility aids aren’t a negative thing. They help us get around and manage our symptoms. There’s so much shame and stigma around using them, especially when you’re young. I know a lot of disabled folks who are nervous to use them out in public and I totally understand! I was too when I first started using a cane… People will stare at you and some may ask ignorant questions but use it anyway. It’s helping you and doesn’t have anything to do with them.”

Rana (she/her) is a self-taught Black disabled artist living in upstate New York. She creates art inspired by her journey with chronic illness, self love, and mental health. Rana lives with fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, chronic pain syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and chronic gastritis, and has been creating digital art since 2019 when she became disabled. She makes her living as an artist offering digital art commissions for portraits, logos, music covers and more, in addition to selling her designs as stickers and teaching classes on using Procreate. She is excited to join Opera Mariposa in raising awareness for fibromyalgia and other chronic illnesses!
